Bad Vision Common Elderly HD Patients

Elderly hemodialysis (HD) patients have a high rate of visual impairment, data suggest.

In a study, 152 (95.6%) of 159 HD patients older than 65 years had visual acuity levels less than age-expected values, researchers report in the American Journal of Kidney Diseases (2008;52:1131-1138). In addition, 62 patients (39%) fulfilled criteria for legal blindness.

“Formal low-vision assessment and low-vision rehabilitation may be useful in elderly dialysis patients,” the authors concluded.
