Approval for Continuous Glucose Monitor

Abbott Pharmaceuticals' FreeStyle Navigator Continuous Glucose Monitoring System, which provides minute-by-minute information about the rate and direction of changes in blood sugar levels, has been approved for diabetics.

Discretely and continuously measuring glucose levels through a sensor in the back of the upper arm or abdomen, the FreeStyle Navigator system can prompt adjustments that can result in tighter glucose ranges.

“We are always looking for new tools like these to enable people with diabetes to continuously monitor their glucose levels, putting them on the offense, not defense, so they can take action before a high or low glucose level occurs,” commented endocrinologist and director of the International Diabetes Center Richard Bergenstal, MD.

The FreeStyle Navigator system is expected to be available in the second quarter of 2008 by prescription only.
