A study of 1,336 New York City adults revealed that 8.7% have diabetes and another 3.8% have undiagnosed diabetes.

The findings, published in Diabetes Care (2009;32:57-62), come from the New York City Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which was modeled after the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

Researchers measured fasting plasma glucose to determine undiagnosed diabetes and impaired fasting glucose (IFG). IFG was found in 23.5% of subjects.
