More Salt Beneficial To Type 2 Diabetics?

Although patients with type 2 diabetes are often advised to cut back on salt, a recent study found an inverse relationship between all-cause mortality and dietary salt intake.

The study included 638 patients with long-standing type 2 diabetes. After a median of about 10 years of follow-up, 175 patients died, mostly from heart disease. Each 100 mmol rise in 24-hour urine sodium was associated with a 28% decrease in all-cause mortality risk, after adjusting for baseline risk factors. Findings appear in Diabetes Care. 2011;34:703-709).
