Good Diabetes Control Delays Nephropathy
Patients with type 2 diabetes can prolong kidney health by meeting American Diabetes Association (ADA) target levels for hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), BP, cholesterol, and triglycerides.
The multifactorial intervention proved successful in a study of 1,290 Chinese individuals with type 2 diabetes and normal albumin levels.
During the 4.5-year study, new-onset albuminuria developed in 211 patients (16.4%), researchers reported in Archives of Internal Medicine (2010;170:155-161).
The achievement of three ADA goals in particular significantly reduced the risk for this occurrence:
- HbA1c below 7% decreased the risk of new-onset microalbuminuria by 27.1%.
- Systolic pressure below 130 mm Hg decreased risk by 35.5%.
- HDL cholesterol levels above 50 mg/dL for women and above 40 mg/dL for men decreased risk by 28.5%.
