HealthDay News — For patients with type 2 diabetes receiving inpatient diabetes education, blood glucose profile at discharge can predict hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) level at 12 weeks after discharge, according to a study published online in the Journal of Diabetes Investigation.

Keiichi Torimoto, from the University of Occupational and Environmental Health in Kitakyushu, Japan, and colleagues conducted a retrospective study involving 54 patients with type 2 diabetes who received inpatient diabetes education. The authors examined the correlation between continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) parameters and HbA1c level at 12 weeks after discharge.

The researchers observed a correlation for HbA1c level at 12 weeks after discharge with mean blood glucose (MBG) level (P = 0.029). MBG level and disease duration were predictors of 12-week HbA1c level, in multivariate analysis. Disease duration and percentage of time with blood glucose at ≥180 mg/dL correlated with achieving a goal of an HbA1c level <7.0% at 12 weeks after discharge.

"Our results suggested that blood glucose profile at discharge using CGM seems useful to predict HbA1c level after discharge in patients with type 2 diabetes who received inpatient diabetes education," the authors write.
