1,000th LPN Performed
Surgeons at the Cleveland Clinic's Glickman Urological and Kidney Institute completed their 1,000th laparoscopic partial nephrectomy (LPN) on Aug.7, making their experience with the procedure the most extensive in the world.
Inderbir S. Gill, MD, chairman of urology at the institute, performed both the first LPN in 1998 and the 1,000th case 10 years later, according to a press statement.
Institute chairman Andrew C. Novick, MD, commented: “This is a remarkable accomplishment and truly represents one of the contributions to the field that we're most proud of. The pioneering role that we have played in conceiving and developing the field of organ-sparing surgery enables us to continually devise new, innovative surgical techniques to provide patients with the most advanced treatment options.”
