Obesity Worsens Renal Decline

Obesity is a risk factor for renal function decline after dialysis initiation, according to a Dutch study of 1,271 dialysis patients.

During 18 months of follow-up, the annual decrease in measured glomerular filtration rate (mGFR) was 1.2 mL/min/1.73 m2 in normal-weight patients.

Adjusted annual losses in mGFR were 0.4 and 1.2 mL/min/1.73 m2 greater in overweight and obese patients, respectively, and 0.6 mL/min/1.73 m2 less in underweight subjects, investigators reported in the American Journal of Kidney Diseases (2009;53:1014-1023).
