A pilot study showed that megastrol may help improve weight and ability to exercise in dialysis patients, according to a report in the Journal of Renal Nutrition (2009; published online ahead of print).

In the study, investigators randomized nine elderly male hemodialysis patients with cachexia to receive oral megestrol or placebo 800 mg daily for 20 weeks, along with weight resistance physical therapy twice a week before dialysis.
