Surgery Delay Poses Risk

Bladder cancer patients who undergo partial cystectomy (PC) more than 12 weeks after transurethral resection of bladder tumors are at three times higher risk of requiring salvage radical cystectomy than those who have a shorter interval between the procedures, a study found.

The study, by Nader Fahmy, MD, and colleagues at McGill University in Montreal, included 714 patients who underwent PC. Findings appear in the Canadian Urological Association Journal (2009;3:131-135).
