NBI Detects More Bladder Ca Recurrences

Narrow-band imaging (NBI) cystoscopy improves detection of recurrent non-muscle-invasive bladder tumors over standard white-light imaging (WLI) cystoscopy, according to a report in BJU International (2008; published online ahead of print).

The finding, by researchers at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, is based on a study of 427 bladder cancer patients evaluated for recurrent tumors by WLI cystoscopy, then by NBI cystoscopy using the same videoscope.

Tumors recurred in 103 patients (24%); 90 (87%) were detected by NBI and WLI; the other 13 were detected only by NBI cystoscopy.
