PAE Effect on Prostate Zones Characterized

Prostatic arterial embolization significantly reduced volumes of median lobes, central zones, peripheral zones, and whole prostate glands.

Prostatic arterial embolization (PAE) decreases the volume of various prostate anatomical zones and the whole gland, according to researchers who reviewed magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans obtained from 25 patients before and after PAE.

PAE significantly reduced the volumes of median lobes, central zones, peripheral zones, and whole prostate glands by 26.2%, 18.8%, 16.4%, and 19.1%, respectively, Yen-Ting Lin, MD, of the Hôpital Européen Georges-Pompidou in Paris, and colleagues reported online ahead of print in European Radiology. A larger reduction in prostate volume was associated with clinical success.
