Positive Prostate Biopsies Increasing

SAN DIEGO—Positive prostate biopsy rates have been going up in the U.S., and these increases are strongly associated with a national trend towards increasing numbers of specimen vials per biopsy, according to data presented at the American Urological Association annual meeting.

Deepak A. Kapoor, MD, of Integrated Medical Professionals in Melville, N.Y., and colleagues analyzed prostate biopsy pathology data from a national reference laboratory (NRL) and urology group practices. From 2005 to 2011, 437,937 prostate biopsies were submitted for analysis in 4,230,129 vials (9.4 specimen vials per biopsy).

The overall positive biopsy rate was 40.3% at both the NRL and group practices. The positive biopsy rate rose from 38.2% in 2005 to 42.5% in 2011, while the total specimen vials per biopsy increased from 7.9 to 10.7.
