N-3 Fatty Acids May Lower HD Patients' Triglycerides

Jody A. Charnow July 15, 2008

Treatment with n-3 polyunsaturated acids (PUFA) may help hemodialysis (HD) patients lower serum triglyceride levels, according to a report in Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation (2008; published online ahead of print).

NHD May Offer a Fertility Benefit

Rosemary Frei, MSc July 15, 2008

MOUNTING EVIDENCE suggests that nocturnal hemodialysis (NHD) has advantages over conventional hemodialysis (CHD), and improved pregnancy rates may be one of them, according to a small study by Canadian researchers.

Magnesium Halts Vascular Calcification

Jody A. Charnow July 15, 2008

ORLANDO—A small pilot study suggests that magnesium may prevent or delay progression of vascular calcification in hemodialysis patients without a detrimental effect on bone, researchers reported here at the 2008 Annual Dialysis Conference.

Coated Stent Fixes AV Access Rupture

John Schieszer July 11, 2008

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The fluency expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE)-coated stent is effective for treating angioplasty-related extravasation in arteriovenous (AV) grafts and fistulae. Data showed a high rate of technical success with this approach, but primary patency rates were low.

Blood Flow May Affect Graft Survival Rates

John Schieszer July 11, 2008

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Catheter-based blood flow measured at the end of hemodialysis access revascularization procedures may predict graft survival, new data suggest.

AV Fistulas Aid Survival

Jody A. Charnow July 11, 2008

GRAPEVINE, Tex.—Diabetes mellitus and cardiac disease are not associated with shorter life expectancy among patients aged 70 years and older when they commence dialysis, but those who had an arteriovenous (AV) fistula at dialysis initiation had better survival than individuals who started dialysis with a cuffed tunneled catheter.

Home Dialysis Used More At Larger Centers

Rosemary Frei, MSc June 30, 2008

TORONTO—Dialysis centers that serve more than 62 patients and those with a late shift have higher proportions of patients receiving home dialysis, as do centers with greater percentages of younger patients and individuals who work full or part time, a study shows.

Peritoneal Dialysis Best Way to Start

Jody A. Charnow May 23, 2008

STOCKHOLM—Although hemodialysis (HD) is the most common form of renal replacement therapy, 53% of nephrologists worldwide believe patients whose dialysis is planned should start on peritoneal dialysis, according to a survey conducted by Gambro.

N-3 Fatty Acids May Lower HD Patients' Triglycerides

Jody A. Charnow May 08, 2008

Treatment with n-3 polyunsaturated acids (PUFA) may help hemodialysis (HD) patients lower serum triglyceride levels, according to a report in Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation (2008; published online ahead of print).

Dialysis Techniques for ARF May Yield Similar Outcomes

Jody A. Charnow May 06, 2008

Intermittent hemodialysis and continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) appear to lead to similar clinical outcomes for patients with acute renal failure (ARF), according to researchers who reviewed 30 randomized controlled trials and eight prospective cohort studies.
